(meteorobs) Re: July 23/24 1998 observation

Hello Pierre,

Nice rates indeed. About 3/hour with Lm 5.7 on 23/24 is very good indeed
for alfa Cygnids. The 'high' rate of 3 meteors in 1.00 eff was only during
one hour with previous and next hour about 1/hr which is more typical. I
guess this is just poisson statistics, with rates this low such a 'hickup'
can
happen (after all, the difference between 1 meteor or 3
meteors is not much). If you transform the data to real ZHR's and
calculate the standard deviations on it, the lower limits are well
compatible with the 'normal' activity for this period as implied by the
long year average standard curves of Jenniskens and Olech. Anyway,
Sat/Sun 25/26 July I observed for only 25 minutes (then clouds
interfered) with Lm at 6.7 and was so fortunate to see 2 aCyg's. Koen
Miskotte, who was looking in an other sky direction, saw none. With rates
this low, this can happen.

Although we did not 'officially' observe (except for the mentioned 25
minutes) we finally saw some decent Aquarid activity in the night
mentioned above (see also previous report send via Casper ter Kuile). The
previous nights the stream remained rather weak in activity.
