(meteorobs) 1998 PM Perseid data

Hello everyone,

Here is data summary from my observations for the nights of August 11/12,
12/13 and 13/14.

For each nights, I include my observing periods, meteor magnitudes
distributions tables and any breaks/dead time. Also a brief
comment/remark about what I saw. Full reports will be sent to
Mark Davis and Robert Lunsford.

11/12
Best hour produced 15 Perseids. No sporadics for the last half
hour. I was only observing for PER, KCG and CAP. All others were noted
as SPO since I faced north. Yes I was far from the CAP radiant, but the
slow velocity made them easy to recognize. Good number of bright meteors
incl. two -2, four -1 and four magnitude 0. Total 30 meteors in an hour
and half actual observing time before dawn. Skies well above LM 5.0
despite moon and my suburban location.

12/13
From my darker site away from Ottawa, I observed a full 4 hours,
recording 96 meteors (76 of which are Perseids). Observed for the
same showers as last night. I started observing under clear skies
in early evening, facing NE until moonrise caused problems. My LM
was quite impressive early evening but gradually dropped as the
moon climbed. It still remained well above 5.0 all night. Despite
moonlight, my best Perseids hour produced 20 meteors. A few nice,
long paths were seen. Early evening activity was almost as good
with the low radiant + darker sky as it was in the morning with
high radiant + moon. I did not see any KCG (Kappa Cygnids). Meteors
were most numerous at magnitude +4 (table below). As for bright meteors:
Perseids produced one -4 fireball with flash, four -2 and four -1.
Scattered clouds arrived over my site only at the very end, causing
a 5% obstruction for the last 15 minutes.
Overall, I was quite impressed with rates despite moon.

13/14
A shorter observation of a little over an hour, effective observing
time. From my backyard, I observed up till midnight before the moon
cleared the houses. My LM averaged 5.43. The sky transparency looked
better that night. Since I faced east, I also kept an eye for the
Aquarids complex meteors but have seen none. 16 meteors
total (10 Perseids). Brightest meteors were 2 Perseids of magnitude 0,
with trains.
