Re: (meteorobs) Night Vision Goggles
Kim,
I think you are right about where to find these sorts of tubes, but as
far as the heat is concerned, I think you are getting confused with
infra red goggles.
'Night vision' goggles are essentially 2 image intensifier /
photo-multiplier tubes coupled together. When a photon hits the
photo-cathode at the end of the tubes, a shower of electrons is produced
and accelerated towards a phosphorescent screen at or near an electode
at a positive potential difference. When they hit the screen, they
produce a much brighter visible image. Infra-red goggles presumably
work on a similar principle, but perhaps the photo-cathode involved is
more sensitive to infra-red wavelengths than visible. I'm not sure how
this would work.
I would assume that these goggles would amplify all the sky glow as
well, similar to the way a radio receiver amplifies all the interference
as well as the signal you are trying to detect. Perhaps they can be
fitted with ligh pollution filters similar to those used in deep sky
observing.
Clear skies regardless,
Paul.
