                        PERSEIDS 1998

A full Moon on August 8 interfered heavily with the Perseid maximum.
Despite these unfavourable conditions, a considerable number of
observers contributed quickly either directly to the Visual Com-
mission or to any of the mailing lists. Japanese data were partly
taken from the internet home page of the AMOTA.

The fresh peak in the Perseid activity graph, observed since 1988,
fell on Japanese geographical longitudes this year. The scatter in
the data at that time is extremely large and correction factors
very high. We give only a rough estimate of the peak ZHR here
indicating that the peak is still present with no less than its
1997 strength. The traditional maximum of the Perseids occurred
at sol=139.9--140.0 degrees with ZHR=80.

All solar longitudes refer to equinox 2000.0; a constant population
index of r=2.5 was adopted. PER is the number of Perseids inolved.
