(meteorobs) Giacobinids from Cumbria, UK

Hi All,

Quick report on activity - or the lack of it - observed so far from northern
England...

All day the sky here had been spectacularly clear, a rich, almost Antarctic
blue with a scattering of lace clouds, and I spent a long, long day at work
watching the clock, praying "Don't cloud over... don't cloud over..." Early
evening came, and the sky was still clear... looking better and better I
thought...

Then, when I went out at 8.00pm local time (GMT+1hr) I found the sky was
misty, in the pricess of clouding over. I could only just see the Plough, and
the limiting magnitude was around 3.00. Heartbreaking, absolutely
heartbreaking... it cleared up again an hour later, but by then the Moon was
rising, huge and brilliant, up from behind the hills... and in an hour I
didn't see a single GIA....

I intend to set my alarm for midnight local time, in the hope of seeing
something then, but the Moon will be higher and even brighter so I'm not
holding my breath.

After three days of being interviewed about this by local radio and
newspapers, this is incredibly, incredibly disappointing... :-(((

But good luck everyone else...!!

Regards from UK,

Stuart Atkinson
