Claude,

I would truly love to be in the Far East this year and the Near East
next year. Unfortunately I must choose one or another. I am basing my
choice on the fact that most strong Leonid displays occur at least 300
days after comet Temple-Tuttle intersects the Earth's orbit. In 1998 the
Earth reaches the intersection point only 257 days after the comet and
in 1999 we reach this point 623 days after the comet.

Going back to the last return in 1965 the Earth passed this point only
196 days after the comet and little was seen in the way of activity. A
year later we reached this point 561 days after the comet has passed and
we all know happened then!

I truly believe that impressive displays will occur during both years
but both displays will fall far short of the 40/sec. seen in 1966.
