Re: (meteorobs) unexpected strong meteor shower Oct. 18.1UT

This reminds me of something I meant to write you about, Malcolm...

How enhanced are telescopic rates during the Orionids' broad peak period?
I ask because last Friday (Oct 16/17), I was observing deep-sky with my
20" scope prior to setting up for meteor observing (which fatigue unfort-
unately prevented! But that's another story...) During the course of the
evening's observing, however, both myself and my companions noticed an
extraordinarily high rate of telescopic meteors!

During one 15 minute period (I timed it), using various eyepieces with
fields of view anywhere from 55' to 20', we observed no less than *5*
telescopic meteors, including a lovely mag 4 meteor which produced a
train that I watched dissipate over 5 seconds - fascinating.

I understand from visual observing that meteors can come in unexpected
bursts, but this does seem like an unlikely coincidence nonetheless...

PS: Was any good telescopic data collected so far for the ORIs?

Clear skies!
Lew
