Been away for a week and 300 messages to digest.  So somewhat
belatedly...

I've long advocated that we should have two statistics here.  The mean
magnitude <m>, and a corrected mean <m> - LM + 6.5.  The latter is not
perfect, but is better than the simple mean for comparison between
observers viewing under different sky conditions.
