Radar Observations of Leonid Meteor Storm
=========================================
I am writing to let you know of plans for SKiYMET meteor
radar observations of the November 1998 Leonid Meteor Storm
which may be of interest to you or your colleagues.
A three-frequency SKiYMET Meteor Radar System will observe
the 1998 Leonid Meteor Storm from Tindal Royal Australian
Air Force Base which is located about 300 km south of Darwin
in northern Australia. The three-frequency radar is
comprised of three SKiYMET radar systems synchronised to
transmit simultaneously at 17.45 MHz, 29.85 MHz and 38.15
MHz.
The northern Australia radar observations are part of the
Leonids '98 International Observation Program which includes
Low-Light-Level Television (LLTV) observations in Mongolia
and LLTV and radar observations in Australia. During the
meteor storm data gathered from the various instruments will
be analysed in real-time in the field and sent to the
University of Western Ontario where researchers will
determine a realtime flux profile. The flux profile
information will allow the USAF 55th Space Weather Squadron
to advise satellite operators of the potential hazard to
space satellites whilst the Leonid Meteor Storm is actually
happening.
Genesis Software will also operate its own single-frequency
(35.24 MHz) SKiYMET system in southern Australia during the
Leonid Meteor Storm.
Further information on the 1998 Leonid Meteor Storm
observations can be found at:

Results and updates will be posted on the web site as they
become available.
Kind regards, Jacqui Nelson.
