(meteorobs) 1998 Sino-Dutch Leonid Expedition

Chinese and Dutch observers in the Sino-Dutch Leonid Expedition observed
strongly enhanced activity of the Leonid meteor stream on November 16, 1998,
between 17.35-22.50 UTC.
Observations were conducted from Delingha (Qinhai Radio Observatory) and
Ulan stations, Qinghai Province, central China. The enhancement included a
spectacular number of fireballs.
From 489 Leonids observed by M. Langbroek between 19.22-22.50 UTC(limiting
magnitude +-6,7) on November 16, 41 were brighter than magnitude -3 with
sveral in the -8 to -12 range. A preliminary Zenith Hourly Rate from
observations by M. Langbroek and C. Johannink gives ZHR 151 +--8 for
19.22-20.59 UTC and ZHR 158 +--7 for 20.59-22.50 UTC. Normal ZHR for this
solar longitude is near 13, thus rates were well over a factor 10 enhanced.

Stream rates observed from Delingha Station during previous nights were at
the normal annual level for the stream:
6+--1 (Nov 13.88 UTC)+ADs- 7+--2 (Nov. 14.83 UTC)+ADs-12+--1 (Nove. 15.87UTC)
