(meteorobs) Leonids from Hawaii

I have just returned from our Leonid expedition in Hawaii and am pleased
to report that the rates were pretty high. I heard about the early peak just
yesterday, and conclude that the structure of the filaments must be pretty
complex. Anyway, we had a below freezing wind chill and windy conditions at
Hale Pohaku. We saw many fireballs. One -8 had a 1 minute and 40 second train!
Many sporadics were seen too, and a new radiant was suspected somewhere between
Gemini and Orion. This may be the same one I reported in 1996 on the same date.

I observed for three hours from 12:02 to 15:02 before clouds rolled in. It
cleared up again for 15 minutes during strong twilight and 26 more Leonids were
seen. In all, 318 Leonids were seen in 3 hours and 15 minutes. A good show. In
fact, the best shower I have ever seen! When I translate my tape I will post
magnitudes.
