Re: (meteorobs) Tape Recorder for observing?

In a message dated 98-11-20 07:48:53 EST, you write:

<< So, what is the most inexpensive (a big concern for me) recorder-mic setup
that is reliable, fairly battery-efficient (with a long battery life, or
rechargeable or something), and easy to use in a meteor-recording situation?
And can be easily found at a Radio Shack or Circuit City or something..... >>

I think my first recorder was about $25 from Radio Shack. But since I dropped
it a few times it finally died and I replace it with another -this time a
metal cased one. That was a little more expensive ($79) but its supposed to
take a beating. Something else to think about is batteries. I would only buy
one that takes regular AA or AAA batteries. Some were offered with those
Lithium ones - again a little expensive.

I would also look for one where the PAUSE button is hard to pressor mistake
for stop or any other button for that matter. The metal one I just got has a
pause thats a slide switch so there is no mistaking it for a stop button.
Last years Leonids I pressed PAUSE in the dark after meteor #3 and the rest of
the 4 hour session obviously didn't record :( Doh!

All Radio Shack recorders are the Optimus brand, which are supposedly a decent
make. Get one you can afford and you could always upgrade at a future time.
Hope this helps.
