I hope this guy lost his job over this ridiculous statement. How did he become
Astronomer Royal?  
Meteors large enough to strike the ground use up their energy at a distance of
many miles above the Earth's surface, giving the object more than enough time
to cool in their freefall. The Fire Dept. should take another look at arson.
