There is a ZHR chart for Leonids at http://www.imodot net/news/news.html.
There are two distinct maxima, the predicted one, occuring around Nov
17.8 and the 'early' one at around Nov 17.15 . This is very similar to
the maxima sequence of Perseids, with the new maximum preceeding the old
one by several hours. Could this be the same kind of event as with
Perseids, with parent comet passing perihelion and supplying the meteor
stream with fresh new material?

There might already be such an explanation on the net, but I haven't
seen it yet.
