(meteorobs) Comets and Meteor Showers

Ladies and Gentlemen!

I always wanted to say that.

What follows is an explanation of what has been happening in my attempt to
find a new home for the Comets and Meteor Showers web site. If you don't
care to read on, just remember the following

http://comets.amsmeteors.org

as the new home of my web site!

Anyway, as many of you may already know, about a month ago I began looking
for a new home for my Comets and Meteor Showers web site. Geocities was
tried and might have worked, but I was somewhat hesitant because it was so
big. How would it stand up to a large number of hits if I experienced
traffic like I did for the Leonids last November? I tried to talk to their
technical people about this, but after one month of not hearing from them,
I cancelled my site registration.

Fortunately, two good things happened while moving the site and testing it
out. First, I finally managed to break the site down into logical
directories, which makes it easier for me to maintain and slightly speeds
up access. The setup on the medicine server at Washington University is
such that most of the files are in one main directory. Second, and most
important, Jim Bedient e-mailed me during March and said the AMS would be
happy to host my web pages. Wow. So, in light of the fact that Geocities
was not answering my e-mail, I had a chance here to move my site to a
location run by people I knew and trusted. To top it all off I was able to
get a shorter more appropriate address. Thus, no more

It now,

http://comets.amsmeteors.org

Simple and more astronomical sounding. Not to mention that both "comets"
and "meteors" are located within the title. :-)

I have now completed the move. I am still doing a little polishing here and
there. For instance, I went crazy with counters trying to keep track of
what pages were being accessed at the medicine site. That little three-plus
year experiment is over and now counters only reside on the primary pages
people tend to bookmark to enter my site.

I will improve the site during the next few months. Last year I received a
lot of positive feedback on the additions to the Draconids and Orionids. I
hope to upgrade all of the major showers in this way. Also, many people are
aware of my glossary, but I am going to attempt to go through and make
every word that is or should be in the glossary clickable to take the
reader directly to a definition. If there is something else you would
really like to see, I will be glad to hear from you and consider further
changes.

As for now, the medicine server version of my web site will stay up for
another month. I am going to start adjusting some of the links to the AMS
site and I need to start contacting some of the groups and organizations
that link to the site now and let them know the new address. At the end of
May, the medicine site will cease to exist, except for the Leonids pages,
which will remain there as a mirror of the AMS site through this year's
Leonid display.

Sincerely,
Gary
