(meteorobs) Observation Apr 23/24 1999

Hi everyone,

After nights of cloudy skies and haze, I was able to get one good night of
viewing on April 23/24. I headed out to Casselman early enough in the
afternoon to set up my scope and then casual observe in the evening. It was
hard enough to observe with strong gusts of northerly wind! I then took a
long nap to begin meteor observing at 5:50 UT (1:50 local time). The
quarter moon was still up but limiting magnitude was already over 6.0. It
was a very transparent sky. After moonset, limiting magnitude averaged
close to 6.3 (about 6.5 near zenith).

I observed for close to 3 hours. Lyrids activity was low as usual with only
2 seen. Both Lyrids were faint. I did plot a few slow to average speed
meteors come from around Ursa Minor. Two of these were fairly bright at
magnitudes -1 and 0. The Librids (Ecliptical radiant) was not active. One
fast sporadic seem to align with the Omega Capricornids. The highlight of
the night was the very last meteor. It was an earth grazing Eta Aquarid of
magnitude +2 that shot 40 degrees in a split second! It left a 1 second
train behind.

Full reports sent to Bob Lunsford and Mark Davis at NAMN.
