(meteorobs) Eta Aquarids 1st Report

Hi All

This is the preliminary report for observations of the Eta Aquarids on the
morning of the 6th of May Local Time (5th of May UT)

Location: RJ Hammer Arboretum, Olinda, Victoria,
Australia. Elevation 420m
Observers: (5) Adam Marsh, Roger Vodicka, Martin Rudd,
Lance Kelly, Darren Davis.
Preliminary Data: From Adam Marsh's Observations.

Note: Due to the low limiting mag it is hard to calculate the ZHR. The
actual figure could vary by much more than the stated value. Even with a
65% gibbous moon the display was still great.

Two fireballs were seen:
The first at 04:18 LT was an excellent display of what the Eta Aquarids
can do. The fireball was very Leonid like in its appearance. The fireball
traveled from East and moved along a 50? path ending near Crux. At its
brightest it reached -5 and produced a 20? train lasting in excess of 30
seconds. The train showed movement due to high atmosphere wind currents
and was a great sight. In colour it started off white and moved through
blue and a little violet at the end.
The second was a -4 Eta Aquarid observed in the North. The time was
around 05:30 LT when it was seen. The fireball was yellow in colour and
exhibited a 5 second train which was staggered, or more accurately,
corrugated in appearance. It was another terrific meteor.

Everyone present had a great night and it was well worth the travel to a
fog free site.
