(meteorobs) ETA "observations"
Hello All,
I finally had a chance this week to get out under clearer
skies and spot a few Eta Aquarids. I camped in the mountains east of
Chattanooga this past weekend with mostly clear skies and a very dark
site. Haze and trees around the perimeter, however, seemed to reduce
the number seen, as my rates jumped way up when I returned to my normal
"home" site wednesday morning (see report below).
The ETA's should get star billing when it comes to rating
beautiful meteors -- most of the ones I saw were bright, colorful, and
often had long-lasting trains -- and I've only seen a few! In fact, a
quick look at the mag. distribution of the few I have seen is telling...
-2(2) +1(3) +2(2) +3(2) +4(2) +5(1) ...out of 12 seen, seven were +2
or greater. All +1 or greater were greenish blue, one had a three
second train, another had a train of two seconds. Three had
path-lengths greater than 40 degrees.
