The late George Lovi (who for over 20 years wrote the "Ramblings" column in
Sky & telescope) used to make reference to the "Cowboy Boot" of Vulpecula; an
asterism composed of 5th and 6th magnitude stars that was originally designed
by Hugh S. Rice of New York's Hayden Planetarium in the 1940's. Lovi used to
say that if you could clearly see all the stars in the "Boot" (it even had a
spur!) you had excellent skies.
