Asaf: There are several variables involved in this scenario: The
altitude of the meteor above Earth's surface, its apparent altitude above
your horizon, its apparent altitude above the farthest person's horizon,
and atmospheric extinction which would cause a faint meteor to be invisible
near the horizon. I do not want to consider atmospheric refraction.
Let us make a theoretical case for the greatest distance between two
observers for a meteor bright enough to be seen by both at their apparent
horizons despite atmospheric extinction (an unlikely event). We will set
the distance of the meteor above Earth's surface at 80 miles or 128 km. In
that case, the distance between the two observers would be 1580 miles or
2525 km. This is an extreme case in which the distance between the two
observers can increase only if the meteor appears at an altitude greater
than 128 km above the Earth's surface.
I make a reckless guess that in practice the greatest distance between two
distantly spaced observers who can observe the same meteor will be on the
order of 2000 to 2200 km for a meteor at an altitude of 128 km.
