Basically what Kevin said was true -- I only saw three or four flashes
emitted by Starshine on the morning of its deployment from STS-96. For the
most part, these flashes were no brighter than +1 or +2 magnitude; I saw them
all with 7 x 35 binoculars, although my wife did catch one of the flashes
with her unaided eyes. Thankfully, we knew where the satellite was supposed
to be that morning (roughly 2 degrees in front of the Shuttle). Without the
Shuttle, I doubt that we would have been able to find it at all!
