Well, Peter, in short order you've gotten quite a (confusing) range of answers
to your query, from some of the most experienced (or at least active) meteor
observers alive! I hope that was what you were looking for. :)

At the very least, you may be able to glean some criteria which are NOT useful
for eliminating sightings as probable fireball observations!


BTW, Mr. Zay's exceptions to the criteria I mentioned all have validity. Except
however, that I have not heard of bright fireballs near the horizon appearing
foreshortened or seeming to "hang in the sky" the way a flare might. What is
supposed to produce this effect, anyone?
