Hello Robert Lunsford and Robert McNaught: Thanks for your input and
suggestions for watching Leonids collide with the Moon this November.
After several fits and starts, by crude graphical means rather than
strenuous mathematics that would involve a spherical trigonometry problem
involving 4 planes (for Pete's sake, I said to myself, we're only talking
about observing in an area approximate 30 by 15 minutes of arc in extent),
I've determined that the Leonid radiant will be overhead at these lunar
coordinates if the shower maxs at 1 hr 50 min Nov. 18, U.T.:
Lat. N 22 deg.
Long. W 16 deg.
Anyone desiring a challenge is welcome to prove me wrong, mathematically,
if they wish. Any proofs by crude graphical means will require
negotiations.
The above position puts the radiant overhead of a point about 160 km sw of
the crater Timocharis and 240 km nnw of the crater Eratosthenes. The
point will probably be just east of the terminator on the illuminated
portion of the lunar disk. These craters are in Mare Imbrium.
Come the evening of November 17, here in the U.S., if conditions permit, I
plan to observe the unlit portion of Mare Imbrium with my 12.5 - inch
reflector, using a 10mm eyepiece providing 160 power. Results will be
posted here.
