Bob, this does indeed sound like a classic description of an "electrophonic
sound" - a sound heard by the fireball witness SIMULTANEOUS WITH the meteor,
and thus not due to any sound directly generated at the meteor's altitude...

Theories to explain these (quite commonly observed) electrophonics mostly
enter around the generation of radio waves by the meteor - or else by its
interaction with the Earth's magnetic environment - and the production of
resonant sound NEAR the observer, induced by these radio waves. (One thing
often noticed about electrophonic witnesses is that they are near metallic
objects of a certain size or larger.)

BTW, I think the forward from the RASC list was done by Dr. Ed Majden of
the AMS Spectrographic Project, not Elton Jones?
