(meteorobs) Observation July 10/11 1999

Hello,

Last Saturday night July 10/11, I had the privilege to observe meteors
under dark skies on top of the mountain at Foymount, the highest populated
point in Ontario. Several other observers present were busy with telescopes
all night long. Skies were wonderful and pristine; crystal clear with cool
temperature reaching 11C. No mosquitoes after dark added to a completely
enjoyable session. Despite the short night from my latitude, the limiting
magnitude for me averaged 6.7 to 6.8.

I was watching for a number of different minor showers, plotting everything
I saw. I faced to the south-east at 60 degrees high all night to
concentrate on the July Pegasids and keep an eye out for Sagittarids among
others. With almost 3 hours observing, I recorded 31 meteors. The July
Pegasids were quite decent, including a nice magnitude -1 that went down
low just west of Fomalhaut.

The Sagittarids and Theta Ophiuchids were also weakly active. Sporadics
still below the double digit mark.

The surprise of the night was the appearance of Perseids meteors, my firsts
for this year. Although only two were seen, one of them was the brightest
meteor of the night at magnitude -2, and left a one second train.

For this session, I took a number of breaks including a particlularly long
4:46-5:25 to pause while setting up camera and my telescope. To avoid short
observing periods, this time I've included these breaks as dead time (which
explains the first observing period of 4:20-6:18 resulting only with an
effective 1.00 hour teff).

Full report and plotting charts will be prepared soon and sent to NAMN.
