George:   In regard to the apparent thickness of meteor streams, have you 
considered the angles at which Earth enters the meteor streams?   Earth 
crossing a physically narrow stream nearly perpendicular to the orbit of 
the meteor stream will pass through the stream more quickly than if the 
angle is much smaller.

Judging from the meteor streams graphics shown in Guy Ottewell's 
>Astronomical Calendar<  (the 1998 issue is the the one I'm looking at, p. 
66), the Quadrantids and Perseids intercept the ecliptic at a high angle: 
  if their streams are compact, the duration of Earth's passage through 
them will be brief.  On the otherhand, the inclination of the Orionids' 
orbit, for example,  appears to be small, so even if the stream is compact, 
Earth's passage through the stream would take longer.
