The virus, Wobbler/California, appears to be a hoax. Two good sites for
checking on hoaxes are http://ciac.llnldot gov/ciac/CIACHoaxes.html , the
Computer Incident Advisor Capability (CIAC) of the US Department of Energy,
and http://kumite.com/myths/ , a computer virus myth home page devoted to
investigating Internet hoaxes.
I found a description of Wobbler/California on that second page. The
company allegedly confirming the existence of the virus in some versions
denies ever having done that.
I strongly recommend that all Internet users bookmark these two pages and
check them (and some of their links) whenever a virus warning appears. The
CIAC page in particular gives specific ways to check the validity of any
virus warning as well as common characteristics of hoaxes. In general,
always be suspicious of any virus warning encouraging you to send the
warning to all your friends or everyone in your address book.
Don't take my word for it. Take a look at these two pages for
Wobbler/California, and make your own decision. That's why those pages are
there!
