(meteorobs) Zay Stay On or Stay Off Poll Results
My initial intention for this poll was to find out if a significant majority
on this meteor observing list were dissatisfied with my presence as it was
sometimes suggested to me by the inner circle. After it got started, a fair
number of folks added their opinions and suggestions either openly to the
list or to me privately. I found the opinions quite interesting really. Those
who posted an opinion on the list pretty much mirrored what I got privately
from others. One of them that some people brought up was a request to be less
abrasive. Over the past weekend I read every post I sent out this past month
at least 4 times, trying to find where I've been abrasive to anyone. I didn't
see anything that I would call overly "abrasive". I do realize that I have
been involved in various mud slinging contests on occasions prior to this,
but I was trying to see where I appeared abrasive in this latest go around
where I read some abrasiveness directed at me. I've concluded that what
seemed abrasive from me was actually my expressing an honest opinion that
seemed to threaten some folks sense of security. It was a form of "Shooting
the messenger that carried the bad news". Bad news or opinions are often
honest, and sometimes unwelcomed. Also when expressing an opinion, I often
use terms that sound terse with somewhat extreme examples to bring out a
subtle concept that may go unnoticed otherwise.
Anyhow, from the poll I received a total of 18 responses that were either on
the list or sent to me privately. Of these 18, one stated that it didn't
matter to the individual if I left or stayed. Another person was so upset
with me that I interpreted it as a "Get off" vote despite the non-committal.
The rest (16) requested that I stay. Assuming that this is somewhat
representative for those who didn't participate, I felt it was an indication
that at least a significant number of people prefer that I stay. I will try
to consider in my postings some of the opinions that were added. But if
anyone believes that anything I've posted this past month as being abrasive
or offensive in someway, I'm afraid you won't be noticing much of a change in
my posting style. If I suddenly disappear from meteorobs, it would be because
I was either involuntarily removed or I had the "Big One" and am pushing up
daisy's. This will be my only post on the poll results, so if any parting
shots are made, they will be done so unanswered.
