Yes, not enough people do it these days. I've come across a couple of
people, since I moved here in Nov 97, who have told me that they saw one
hit the ground not far from the highway where they were driving. The
story may be stretched a little but I don't know of too many people who
would pull off to the side of the road to look for a bright object that
impacted the ground in their view. Maybe we could blame movies like
"Fire in the Sky" in part for the fear.

We're not in this for the money, but, everyone on this list knows that
a good find might help pay off the mortgage :-) Fortunately in Canada
the government knows that people want some compensation (are greedy) so
the Geological Survey of Canada has a standing MINIMUM offer of $500
(about $333 US) for the first specimen of any Canadian meteorite. I'm
all for making sure the thing gets speedily into the hands of
researchers, all the more so if I knew that the first sample in resulted
in a monetary award.

I can't say that I know anyone at the Geological Survey Ottawa, but I'm
getting to know some of you. Yah, I'd probably would at least e-mail a
few of you, then call the media, followed by a call the researchers. It
may not be the right order to do things in some people's minds, but that
is what I think I'd do.
