Probable meteor flashes across sky

What was probably a sizable meteor flashed across the morning sky Wednesday,
giving Bay Area residents a spectacular but extraordinarily brief light show
in broad daylight.

The fiery demise of a chunk of rock or iron from space entering Earth's
atmosphere at cosmic speed -- described as a bright blue streak, heading
toward the Pacific -- was reported by observers from Napa to Hollister. It
disappeared in a couple of seconds.

Based on descriptions from observers, astrobiologist Kevin Zahnle at
NASA/Ames Research Center in Mountain View estimated the space-traveling
rock was about 100 to 150 miles high when it flared bright enough to be seen
in sunlight.
