In reply to what Joe wrote below, I also recall the incident he spoke
about. The alleged Leonid meteorite also occurred at around 8PM in the
evening, when it would have been impossible for a Leonid to reach us on
this side of the earth. I saw a report on one of the NY Network stations. I
believe they had a "professional astronomer" on screen telling them it
could have been a Leonid. I also saw the "alleged meteors", several of
which were clearly quartz...not a common mteorite material :->!! I also
recall the Astronomy writer for Discover magazine telling people to watch
for the Leonids from sunset until 10PM...so the misconceptions are not
limited to the lay public.
However, when it comes to the vast public, when they saw a UFO, no fact
you can bring to light will change their mind...what they saw was
unidentified, even if you identify it! Or the fireball "landed in the next
field over", even though the same fireball was spotted 100 miles away
heading in the same direction...again, "landing just behind that hill over
there".
The popularity of the tripe that gets broadcast "coast to coast" by Art
Bell, leading to the #1 overnight ratings is terrifying to me. I listened
to a 1 hour discussion of "goverment mass vaccination" from what was
clearly described as contrails...plain old ice crystals formed when planes
fly through a ripe environment at 30,000 feet. Let's remember why AB is
there..dot it sells to a gullible public. And I do mean sells...ever notice
how listening to one of his shows is like having a nerve pulled out of your
toe through your nose, 1 millimeter at a time??? Why?? To get more ads in,
and listen to what the ads are. I usually pick one meteor night a month to
listen to Art Bell, but that's all I can take. It's too scary what people
will believe.

I've been doing just this for 13 years (as a lecturer and staff instructor

During the 1997 Leonid shower, there were sightings of a few brilliant
fireballs, one of which caught the imagination and attention of the New
York
news media. The following day, several local t.v. stations were
publicizing
the apparent fall of meteorites in the town of Eastchester, New York. At
News 12 we sent a camera crew and reporter to cover the story. The
reporter
actually returned to the t.v. station with "meteorite samples" -- which we
later proved were nothing but common Earth rocks. One of the people who
was
interviewed on camera said that he " . . . actually saw several meteors hit
the ground. One actually dented a nearby car." On the air I pointed out
that were these legitimate meteorites, that -- likely traveling at a speed
of
15-30 miles per second -- they would have done more than just dent a car!
(I
also put forward a "theory" that perhaps somebody was tossing rocks down
from
the top of some nearby apartment buildings).
But despite all of this, when the reporter went back to Eastchester the
next day, the people who were interviewed refused to believe any of it.
"We
know what we saw," said one. And another noted, "we think our story is
still
rock solid."
