(meteorobs) Leonid lectures in NYC area
For those who live in the Greater New York area, the following may be of some
interest:
THE NIGHT THE STARS FELL -- By Joe Rao
The Leonid Meteor Shower at its peak, is the grandest display of celestial
fireworks known to humankind. Over the past several years, Joe Rao, an
on-camera meteorologist for News 12 Westchester, has made the Leonid Meteors
his own special territory. Every year, for two or three nights in
mid-November, a modest number of Leonids appear, perhaps eight to ten during
an hour's watch. But in mid-November 1999, there is a chance that the
Leonids may fall by the hundreds, the thousands, or even the tens of
thousands per hour. This in-depth slide lecture by Rao, who is a lecturer
and staff instructor at the Hayden Planetarium and who also writes the Sunday
astronomy column "Sky Watch" for The New York Times, will prepare you for the
November arrival of the Leonids -- an event that may be a spectacular
astronomical experience! Look for Joe Rao's feature articles on the Leonids
in the November issues of Sky & Telescope and Weatherwise magazines.
Two lectures will be given at two different locations.
