(meteorobs) Leonid Shower - ASA information for the public (fwd)
Comments on this would be appreciated. It contains some additional dust
trails identified by Esko Lyttinen and David Asher, but the geometry is
from calculations by David Asher. There are no additional trail
encounters in 1999 from 7 to 19-revs old, so perhaps no surprises in this
respect. 2001 now really looks like the big year, and Europe has a chance
in 2002. David is writing something formally for the IMO.
Cheers, Rob
From: John O'Byrne
Over the next few years, there are significant prospects for strong
displays of Leonid meteors in mid-November. Prediction of Leonid
activity has had a rather chequered history, not helped by the events in
1998, but a new theory is able to explain the historical events and
should thus be able to make sound predictions for the near future.

This information is provided by Rob McNaught (from Siding Spring) as
an initiative of the ASA Education Subcommittee. It can be freely
copied for distribution to the public provided the ASA letterhead is
retained.
