Norman:

Regarding stories of the '66 Leonids, here's mine: I was in Army Basic
Training at Fort Gordon, Georgia. From 2 to 4 AM was my turn on fire
watch - one guy in each platoon walking around to check that the ancient
WWII barracks with their coal funaces or cranky oil heaters in our platoon's
tents didn't burn the clowded place down.

The guys going off duty said there were a lot of shooting stars tonight.
Only about 25% of the sky was open of clouds but I could see several
meteors simultaneously. I was in a local astronomy club at home and
knew that something big was happening, and that it was the Leonids, but
there wasn't any way I could call home. Later, the clouds thinned out
some and the meteors increased in numbers as dawn approached. I
remember standing in the line to get in the mess hall with everybody
around already bored with the "shooting stars" and talking football. I
was just standing there with my mouth open, looking up!

I have a little Supercircuits surveillance camera used for occultations.
 I
also have an old "baby Moon" hupcap, polished with 30 coats of Turtle Wax.
It gives an all-sky view. I will try to tape fireballs as I go about other
things.
I'm not sure what the limiting mag will be for moving objects, but I'll see.

     Clear skies,
     Bob Young
