RE: (meteorobs) Start Time 10/17 on East coast USA
John, if you are in NJ, NO Leonids can possibly be seen before 10PM, so
unless you want to chill out first, or watch for some Taurids, it is best
not to start before then. From 10 PM EST until 10:50 or so, the radiant is
still below the horizon, but on the 17/18th, with the storm possibly not
completely over yet (if predictions hold) we may be able to see some very
long pathed earth grazing Leonids that just touch the air above us. After
10:50, Leonids are visible from the radiant, however with the radiant
elevation at zero, if the rate is a more normal ZHR 15-20 you will see very
few. On the nights before and after (including the peak night) the highest
rates of the annual (not storm) Leonids will be closest to dawn, when the
radiant nears it's maximum elevation. Nautical twilight (about the limit
for serious observations) is at 5:45 AM here in NW NJ, so on the other
nights I'd try and end at 5:30 or so, and backtrack how many hours of cold
I think I will last. Hopefully for me that's about 6 hours :-)

coast USA? What is the radiant rise time, and how much earlier is there a
possibility of seeing possible "Skimmers"?
