Re: (meteorobs) Nov 16/17 Leonids Observation

Nice observation Stephen from our beautiful State & Commonwealth! In general
terms, here are my observations from Central Virginia (just NE of Madison Heights):
In three hours of observing between 0630 UT and 0930 UT, I saw about 50 meteors
(so far I have not successfully transcribed my tape, but I kept a separate count as a
backup). Almost 75% of the meteors were Leonids, so there was a noticeable buildup from the
previous morning. I observed under clear, crisp 6.3 Limiting magnitude skies (right in my backyard!). It is my
prediction that the experts may be calling the sharp Leonid peak correctly for 2 UT. If it is
off, we here in North America are hoping for a backside peak like 5 to 8 UT!!!
Certainly I hope that everyone else is beginning to get some good looks at the Leonids!!

** My science students here @ Nelson County High School are also making observations
of the Leonids for the worldwide project out of Japan. So far their data agrees with mine, no
peak has occurred yet for the Leonids.
