Seems that this really was the maximum with not a extreme ammount of meteors
on either side of the maximum. From about 10pm-2am EST we observed in very
clear skies. Most of the more impressive meteors were just sporadics. We
did do some nice observing of Saturn and Jupiter though. The Leonids did
start coming with greater regularity near 2am, but nothing spectacular.

We (three guys from northern Germany) went out at about 1:45 UT but had
many clouds. The Skies opened at approximately 1:55 UT and stayed clear
for about 20 Minutes (p=0.5). At about 2:05 +-2 min., we counted roughly
(really just a first estimate) about 10 to 15 Meteors per Minute!!! Really
a great show for someone who travelled 8000km last year for the expected
maximum over Asia!! After 2:09 UT, new clouds appeared and hid the sky
till 2:25 UT Now, just occasionally, a meteor appeared, the event
seemed almost over... it seems, as if all calculations were really
precise. What does a meteor watcher want more?

 Greetings from northern Wisconsin.
I was just out in the country away from the light pollution with my wife and
13 year old son. We observed 8 Leonids from 0135 to 0155 CST. Not too bad
for 20 minutes. I might try again a little later.

                           Press release

Leonid meteor storm materializes around expected peak time (UPDATE)
===================================================================

Experienced visual observers watching near Malaga and at the Sierra
Nevada Observatory in Spain and near the Gorges du Verdon in the French
Provence report that Leonid meteor activity peaked at up to 30 meteors
per minute shortly after 2 am Greenwich Mean Time. This activity was
characterized by a lot of faint meteors and almost no fireballs.

Meteor astronomers reduce the actual numbers of meteors seen to a
standard value, called the Zenithal Hourly Rate (ZHR), which takes
into account the quality of the sky as well as the direction from
which meteoroids enter the atmosphere. The peak activity reported by
the abovementioned groups of observers corresponds with a ZHR around
5000, which is considerably more than what most meteor observers had
hoped for (around 1000).

Preliminary reports of other observing groups at Tenerife, Canary
Islands, near Valencia in Spain, and in Jordan confirm the picture
sketched above.

Radio observations from Japan and the Czech Republic also indicate a
peak time between 2:00 and 2:10 am Greenwich Mean Time.

The observed peak time coincides almost perfectly with the peak time
of 2:08 am Greenwich Mean Time predicted by Asher and McNaught,
indicating that the activity was due to the dust trail created
the Leonids' parent comet, Tempel-Tuttle, about 100 years ago
(i.e., 3 revolutions ago of the Comet around the Sun).

Marc Gyssens
International Meteor Organization

Below is a more technical description of the observed Leonid peak
activity.

       -------------------------------------

       I M O S h o w e r C i r c u l a r

       -------------------------------------

               LEONID Activity 1999

Visual observations of the 1999 Leonids revealed
a distinctive peak with a ZHR of about 5000 on
November 18, 2h05m +/-10m UT (solar longitude
235.287 +/- 0.007, eq. 2000.0). ZHR levels
were above 1000 from roughly 1h30m UT to 3h00m UT
corresponding to 235.26 to 235.32 degrees in solar
longitude.

All observers who were able to view the peak under good
sky conditions reported an abundance of faint meteors and
a relative absence of fireballs. Some observers noticed
a drop in the population index (i.e., a larger fraction of
brighter meteors) after the peak.

Reports from Mohammad Odeh (Jordanian Astronomical Society)
and Casper ter Kuile (Dutch Meteor Society, observing near
Valencia, Spain) are very consistent with the picture sketched
above.

In addition, radio data from K. Maegawa (Toyokawa Meteor Observatory,
Aichi, Japan) reported by Kazuhiro Suzuki and the backscatter
radar data from Ondrejov Observatory (Czech Republic) reported by
Petr Pridal and Rosta Stork yield a peak time between 2h00m UT
and 2h10m UT.

It seems that the peak time of 2h08m UT predicted by Asher/McNaught
is confirmed within a margin of at most a few minutes, although the
observed activity is significantly higher. It is reasonable to
conclude that the peak activity has been caused by the 3-revolutions
old dust trail of 55P/Tempel-Tuttle.

The following observers have contributed data immediately
after the event, from which the ZHR profile given below
has been derived:

Per Aldrich, C.L. Chan, Asdai Diaz, Yuwei Fan, Fei Gao,
Lew Gramer, Andre Knoefel, Wen Kou, Alastair McBeath,
Tom Roelandts, Sirko Molau, Renke Song, Wanfang Song,
Honglin Tao, Dan Xia, Dongyan Zha, Jinghui Zhang, Yan
Zhang, Jin Zhu.

(For groups of observers, only the name of the contributing
observer has been mentioned.)

Contributions are welcome.

It looks as if this year's Leonid showing is pretty weak,
unfortunately, but we can hope for a sudden increase in
the next few hours.

Lucky they are! We here in Moscow (Russia, Europe) are having bold flat round
zero because of complete overcast.

There's still more than 3 hours left till 02:08 UT.

EMO Leonid Report for 16/17 November 1999

The Sandia All-sky camera was in operation at EMO. Sky conditions were
mostly cloudy. It cleared off at 10:30 UT on Nov 17. Conditions were not
ideal. Some haze and ground fog persisted but stars were visable through
this. I just finished monitoring this mornings video tape from 10:30 UT to
14:45 UT. 17 Nov. I watched Jupiter set, observed an iridium flare at
13:13:03 UT and observed Venus rise. As for meteors. ZERO Leonids and ZERO
sporadics were recorded. The Sandia all-sky camera should record all
meteors brighter than ~-2.0 magnitude.

It is raining here in SW England :-(
So, unlike the great display of last year, I will see
nothing.

On my amateur radio there are reports of +40sec
reflections by stations in eastern europe which
may suggest fireballs ?
But no visual reports. Does it rain ( or snow) there
also ?
How goes it in Lebanon/Israel/Africa/S.Europe ? Anyone
got clear view ?
Anything at Ondrejov ?

Just as I was about to post this :--
I have one report of about 20 meteors/min visual at
about 2am (UTC)in Scotland from another, non-meteor, list.

Subject: (meteorobs) Media Ignorance

Hello all:

New to this list, we subscribed a few days ago with the Leonid
meteor showers in mind, to hopefully get some viewing tips, etc., and
are enjoying the posts. I also managed to see the fireball last evening
around 7 PM EST, and was quite dismayed this morning to hear our local
radio station (CJXY 95.3 FM, "Y95" in Hamilton, ONT) refer to this as
possibly the beginning of a major show of Leonid meteors tonight, on
their 7:30 AM newscast. Trying to be helpful, my wife Debbie called and
tried to clarify that the fireball was a separate entity and had nothing
to do with the Leonids; indeed, the constellation Leo wasn't even
visible at this time, not to mention the fact that the fireball came
from TOTALLY THE WRONG DIRECTION... but I should point out, she wasn't
talking to the news director, just the on-air hosts, Scott and Lori.
She also mentioned that no one was sure at that time that it had
actually been a meteor, but could have been space junk re-entering the
atmosphere, for example.

Hearing the same mistake yet again at 8 AM, she called in just
before 8:30 AM. Again, trying to be helpful, she told them about the
NASA website with the updated information saying that it probably wasn't
a Leonid, and this time the hosts were curt, and ended the conversation
with "Look, was it a light?", to which Debbie replied, a bit puzzled
"Well, yes"; he then added, "Was it a shooting star?", to which she
replied "Well, they're not sure, it might have been...". He then stated
"Well, that's good enough for us!" and abruptly hung up! And I'm sure
this wasn't an isolated incident, if anyone else out there tried to be
"helpful", they may have run into the same arrogance; I guess since
we're not the "news guys", we can't know what we're talking about. It
also perturbs me that the media will tell a sensational story even if it
means ignoring what might be the truth, because the truth is sometimes
boring.

Oh well, at least we tried... but it makes you wonder how much of
the news you hear really happened, or how much has been omitted or even
embellished just for the sake of selling a story.

Hoping the skies will stay clear tonight... we'll be looking for
real Leonid fireballs!!!

Report on SeeSat from Alan Pickup at Edinburgh, Leonid rate is about
20 minute at about 02:00 UT. I could handle that!

Also Robert Maston of SeeSat reports the midwest fireball may be
re-entry and gives web site where the track is shown on a map.
See: http:llwww.leonidstorm.com/bolide.GIF

Hope there's some meteors left for the US. Good luck, looks good for

Hi all,

Clear skies!

I found some clear sky about 100 km south of Taipei.

Sky about 1/3 to 1/2 cloudy on average, and heavy light pollution.

In about 2 hours effective, saw approx 20 meteors. Mostly Leonids. 2 satellites, including one tumbler.

Will I go tonight? See what reports say today.

Jordan. It's now 1015PM EST here.
Joan and I are getting ready to go out. Clouds have thinned out for the
most part.

Sounded like a classic reentry over Indiana seen from 15 states last night.
The usual garbage and nonsense went on with Art Bell and Peter Davenport

minutes, mostly orange -- just as I would expect.

inpressive.
On this moment te rate is stil 3-5 per minute.

It was a cold -6 C, clear night with a moderate wind, witch keeps your

Subject: (meteorobs) LEONIDS Report - Northern UK, 04.00 Nov 18

Hi, me again...

Well, I wrote the night off too soon! As I was closing down my computer after
writing my previous posting, just after 2.00am, I decided to take One Last
Look out the window, "just in case", as you do... and saw the Pointers of The
Plough breaking thru the cloud. Then a streak of light below them...!

Ah ha... :-)

Back on with the jacket(s) and gloves, grab the bag full of cameras and gear,
and out into the night again... back behind the Scout Centre where I had my
memorable encounter with the Hounds of the Baskervilles last night... and cue
meteors!

The sky was clear, on and off, for the next two hours, and in that time I saw
almost 100 Leonids. Some very bright - but none I'd class as fireballs - but
most mag 1 or 2. Very few persistent trains. Colours? Predominantly white and
ice blue, quite appropriate for the sub zero conditions.

When I'd found myself actually sleeping on my feet I realised it was time to
go home, and it was misting over again anyway, so I repacked my bag and
headed back out of the shadows and into the lights - only to see a Police car
gliding towards me. So, there I was, wrapped up in so many layers and hoods
and sleeves I looked like a cross between a Jawa and the Grim Reaper,
emerging from the shadows of a public building carrying a sports bag. Just a
**little** suspicious! But luckily for me the woman police officer inside the
car knew there was a meteor shower on, and recognised me from the photos
which have accompanied my pieces in the local paper, and she accepted my
explanation, adding that she'd even seen a few herself. In fact, she gave me
a lift home in her police car, so I returned from my meteor watching in
style! :-)

So, not a complete disaster after all. Good luck, and happy hunting, wherever
*you* are!

Hello,

It is 06:30 Am local time in Jordan, and JAS has just ended the
observation. After a very quick discussion with the scientists who were
observing from Jordan with JAS. We concluded that Jordan was one of the
best locations to observe the Leonids '99 from ! Since a decrease of the
activity was noticed before the beginning of dawn ! Nearly all the
participants estimated the ZHR to be some how between 7000 - 10 000 !!
More details and the opinion of the scientists will be added soon at our
site http://www.jas.org.jo/leo99.html

The sky is slightly overcast and the moon is high. This is
not the moonless gazing that we did at all last year when we
saw 839 Leonids in 8 hours. Perhaps there will be better
visibility around 2 a.m. Mountain Time here in Arizona. We
plan on staying up to see, anyway.

I'm sad to say, not really here in Maryland.

It's very cold and it turns out there's quite a lot I need to do tomorrow
morning, so after 15 minutes (1 AM to 1:15 AM) and one legitimate
Leonid....I've decided to pack it in....was fairly clear, the whole sickle
of Leo was above the horizon and all the main stars visible, mainly observed
above Leo to Taurus and to the Big Dipper.....

My apologies for not having a definate limiting magnitude :-) I'd say
average semi-rural conditions.

Pretty disappointing after the fireball fest last year but I had very low
expectations. that peak was even briefer than expected over Europe, it
seems.

I'm sure if your goal is to see a Leonid you will see one, but since the
main peak was nailed this year by the forecast I doubt there's any magical
double peak that would start up another storm.

(watch it go to 100,000/hr right after I go to sleep in 5 minutes :-)

Subject: (meteorobs) incredible display in Eastern Spain

Our 3-member (Ursa astr. assoc of Finland) team got twice clouded out in
Southern France; but thanks to our meteologist friends back home (sitting
beside satellite maps etc) we got the word to drive to Spain as fast as
possible and onwards to south. Some 40 kilometres north from Barcelona we
found clear sky and a great spot in hills. As soon as we stepped out of the
car numerous leonids were seen and the incredible, almost contiuous
bombarding continued to climb up. The maximum seemed to us to have been
between 0155-0215, but it was followed by couple of intense periods around
0220-0235 too. At best 7 leonids impressive, trail -leaving leonids streaked
simultaneously in formation upwards frm radiant, at maximum time we were
shouting almost continuously of as the meteors were almost incessant, often
2 or more rarely 3 simultaneously visible, repeatedle several in row with 1
second intervals. It gave the impression of ZHR between 1000 and 2500, a
very rough, untrustworthy (feelings) estimate. We have a good tape with
counting so studying that later on gives more of an actual result.

Great show, the definatively biggest meteor night of our lives so far. A
great timing in the forecasts of David Asher and RobMcNaught.

    It's 23:00 hrs P.S.T. 17 Nov. (7 hrs U.T. 18 Nov.) I just checked our
sky conditions again, at Courtenay, B.C. It looks like our luck has run
out. The skies are heavily overcast with no signs of clearing. I'll check
again later, but it sure doesn't look good. I do hope others will have
better luck!

Thanks Ernie!
Well, we are doing our part for science I guess; proving where the stream is
not! :-(
Still, we don't want to give up yet...

I was out from 01:00 to 02:00 local time here in Northern Virginia. I
saw a half dozen Leonids, four of which were "classic" and fairly bright
with moderately persistent trails. My radio monitoring system shows
activity levels are down somewhat from yesterday at this time. Take
that with some caution as the system has only been working for a half
week and is not calibrated...

We couldn't have had better weather here on the East coast, I think!
Have fun!
