Re: (meteorobs) Re: high rates from Jordan
Dear Meteorobs:
Just a quick summary here. Observed for approximately 6 hours 17/18 NOV
(0430-1030 UT) from Dawson Hill, Fern Creek, Kentucky.
Observers: Tim Totten, Tanya Tuell, Mark S. Williams
LM: 4.5-5.0 (improved as moon set)
We averaged 8-10 per hour (including several sporadics with a radiant to the
northwest) until 4am local (0900 UT) 0900-1000 UT was easily best hour with
an estimated 30-35 LEO.
At 500 am local (EST) (1000 UT) meteor activity decreased drastically.
I will provide a more definitive report later from recorded counts on tape
recorder. We also attempted amateur radio meteor scatter contacts to no
avail (although Tim was sleeping and I was observing visually during best
hour). Also recorded time stamped radio pings monitoring TV channel 2
(55.250 MHz) video carrier in continuous wave mode.
On a related note. I found the coverage of Tuesday night's fireball sadly
lacking. CNN Headline new's package covering Leonid observations in the
middle east actually concluded with footage of the space junk re-entry. I've
passed along a copy of the IMO summary to our radio/tv station's
meteorologist (I'm a broadcaster myself) as he pronounced the Leonids a
"bust".
More to follow.
Regards,
Mark
