Re: (meteorobs) Leonids, Florida 1999, Lew Gramer (GRALE)

Thank you for sharing your experiences of being in our beloved Sunshine State again! I am SO Jealous!! Also, I am certain that you did not "almost freeze" like my students and I here in the mountains of Central Virginia.
It was interesting seeing your picture in the Naples paper. This certainly proves that you were there, as long as that really is you bundled up and looking up at the sky.
Did you see any fireballs? The lack of fireballs is definitely being confirmed by observers everywhere. I even spent some time looking yesterday morning (20 NOV)during the 0330 - 0530 timeframe, while driving up dark and rural US Highway 29 (between Amherst and Warrenton: I was on my way up for Naval Reserve weekend in Arlington), in hopes of capturing a straggler fireball from either the Leonids or the Taurids. However, I did not even see one meteor! Numerous times before, I have been able to see meteors while driving along many different dark roads.
It is good to know that this fireball "drought" for me will likely end with the Geminids (provided that it is clear in Haymarket during the 12 - 14 DEC timeframe). The Geminids are one true reliable meteor shower that has both good rates and bright meteors. This is certainly a meteor shower worth checking out on at least the two big nights (12/13 & 13/14 DEC). Plus most folks will be ready for more meteors after recovering from the Leonids!

>My visual Leonids campaign in South Florida this year was largely a success: I had clear skies for most of both the nights of Nov 16/17 and 17/18, witnessing an amazing burst of Leonids in the final 50 minutes before dawn on 17/18. I had the honor of doing hourly reports to the Marshall Space Flight Center each night of the campaign - which I *hope* were of use. And I felt the deep, warm joy of being in the Florida Keys, the Everglades (for one night) and all the wild Florida places in between.

>Here's a one-line-per period summary of all my visual data for the trip: Note I had to return to the Keys the final night of 18/19 Nov despite cloudy predictions, and so only got one short period that night.
