Hi

Fragment find points to meteorite in Guyra dam

Police divers at the Guyra dam in northern New South Wales have found
fragments in a deep hole in the dam's bed suggesting it was a meteorite
which struck the water storage.

The divers have now abandoned their search and it will be up to the Guyra
shire council to decide if it wants to continue the exploration.

Equipment used this morning discovered a deep hole on the floor of the dam
which had been partially obscured by tonnes of sedimentary soil.

The hole, about 20 centimetres in diameter, extends at least three metres
in depth.

The divers say there is little point in them continuing the search and are
now returning to Sydney.

The search began yesterday when there were indications that a meteorite or
a piece of space junk had entered the dam.

Guyra council is expected to decide in the next day or two whether the
search will continue.
