Re: Geminids and Sporadics (was Re: (meteorobs) the radiant)

Having suffered from a nasty migraine for several days and, even worse,
cloudy skies, I finally had the headache clear to the point that I felt like
looking outside and found the clouds had also cleared. I stood in my front
yard, which is in the middle of a large, lighted city, for several minutes,
hoping to see a Geminid but had no luck. Orion was outstanding, the Pleaides
were as magnificent as ever, and the Hyades also were brilliant, all of which
make going outside worthwhile even if I saw no shooting stars. From what I
have read this morning, at 10:10 a.m. Midwestern standard time, the Geminids
might be better than expected. I plan on going to my country site, which is
very dark, and try to keep warm, and hope the shower is good enough that it
makes my family want to endure the cold to watch it. For the Leonids, we laid
on blankets while in sleeping bags and huddled together, managing to keep
warm enough to watch for several hours. Will try that strategy again tonight
from eleven mst to three, if we can last that long and the Geminids make it
worthwhile.

I would like to thank all those who responded to my several postings on
Saturday. I appreciate the time and effort to answer my questions.
