Re: (meteorobs) Changes in meteor color (was Re: WILL WE SEE GEM FIREBALLS TONIGHT?)



I almost never notice any colour in a meteor but when I was in Tucson last
week, Steve Larson commented on the Leonid fireballs he saw in 1998
showing a clear progression from green to red.  This colour progression is
very clearly evident in the amazing Leonid photo by Iyad Mustafa from
Jordan this year.  His 10 minute exposure with a 28mm f/2.8 lens on
Ektapress 800 ISO colour neg film has around 100 Leonid trails although
only(!) some 70 appear on the print.  All but the faintest trails show
the variation from green thru yellow to orange/red.  See the image at the
