(meteorobs) Aurura Watch....

Sending this to all who may reside within the "viewing window."
Traveling with my children in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island,
Canada in Aug.1989 we were treated to 4 hours of the Northern Lights and
sincerly have never recovered. The experience was riviting especially
as that year was near a solar maximum and the colors were in constant
flux across the sky.Our love for the P.E.I.,Canada, was sealed with this
unique experience. The window of oportunity in Western Mass.has been
historically brief ,half an hour or less and never as intense.
BTW..this forward is from a server which is free for thirty days

AURORA WATCH: Middle Latitude Auroral Activity Watch - 24 Dec
   Date:
       Thu, 23 Dec 1999 21:28:41 -0700 (MST)
  From:
       Cary Oler <oler@dns.ulethdot ca>

                /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\

                    MIDDLE LATITUDE AURORAL ACTIVITY WATCH

WATCH ISSUED: 03:50 UTC, 24 DECEMBER

                /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\

 ACTIVATION: EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY
VALID UNTIL: 19:00 UTC ON 24 DECEMBER

HIGH RISK PERIOD: 24 DEC (UT days)
MODERATE RISK PERIOD: 24 DEC

PREDICTED ACTIVITY INDICES: 24, 15, 15, 12 (24 DEC - 27 DEC)

POTENTIAL MAGNITUDE OF MIDDLE LATITUDE AURORAL ACTIVITY: LOW TO MODERATE

ESTIMATED OPTIMUM OBSERVING CONDITIONS: NEAR LOCAL MIDNIGHT

EXPECTED LUNAR INTERFERENCE: HIGH

OVERALL OPPORTUNITY FOR OBSERVATIONS FROM MIDDLE LATITUDES: POOR

AURORAL ACTIVITY MAY BE OBSERVED APPROXIMATELY NORTH OF A LINE FROM...

NORTH-CENTRAL BRITISH COLUMBIA TO NORTHERN OR CENTRAL MONTANA
THROUGH
THE EXTREME NORTHERN TIER OF THE U.S. STATES, INCLUDING A LINE
NORTH
FROM CENTRAL TO SOUTHERN MICHIGAN TO SOUTHERN MAINE.

ACTIVITY MAY ALSO BE OBSERVED APPROXIMATELY NORTH OF A LINE FROM...

EXTREME NORTHERN UNITED KINGDOM TO NORTHERN AND POSSIBLY CENTRAL
PORTIONS OF NORWAY, SWEDEN AND FINLAND TO NORTHERN RUSSIA. THERE IS
A
SLIGHT CHANCE EXTREME SOUTHERN PORTIONS OF NEW ZEALAND MAY ALSO
SPOT
PERIODS OF ACTIVITY ALTHOUGH LUNAR PHASE WILL MAKE THIS DIFFICULT.

SYNOPSIS...

A disturbance involving the passage of the heliospheric current
sheet by
the Earth has impacted the Earth. Current data is showing high
interplanetary
magnetic field (IMF) strengths and variably southward turnings of the
IMF.
There is a fair chance for minor intensification of auroral activity
over the
high latitude regions. Activity may sporadically become strong enough to
observe from some dark-sky middle latitude locations. However, the
near-full
phase of the moon will strongly hamper the view of activity,
particularly
activity that occurs closer to the horizon. This is not expected to be a
particularly favorable episode of activity, but could produce some
interesting levels of activity over the higher latitudes.

This watch will remain in effect until 19:00 UTC on 24 November
(later
this UTC day). It will then be updated or allowed to expire.

PLEASE SUBMIT ANY OBSERVATIONS YOU MAKE OF AURORAL ACTIVITY TO:
