In his classic book "Getting Acquainted with Comets" (McGraw Hill, 1966),
Robert S. Richardson provides a chapter (#13) on "Your Fireball Observation."
In this chapter, Richardson provides what he describes as a "not too
imaginary" (and rather humorous) conversation between an important
on-the-spot witness to a fireball that went soaring over his alfalfa patch
and a "meteoriticist."

So . . . I would assume that for somebody who studies meteors -- based
solely upon Richardson, who worked at Mount Wilson and Palomar and was later
Associate Director of the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles -- that's what
you would call him/her: a "meteoriticist."
