thanks for your explanation, but I'm not sure whether it fully explains
the phenomenon. I don't feel like focussing on the same spot for a longer
time while driving, but like 'walking around' with my eyes instead.
Also, the LED does not really have time to 'burn' into the retina, since
it's on for 0.2s or so only, and the off for 1 or 2 s.  So the LED is off
most of the time.

When I'm concentrating on the light I get the right color even if it's
away from the center of fov. However, if I think about something else
(there's plenty of time for that during a 7-hour drive at night :-) and
then by chance recognize the flashing light again (just like a meteor
which appears all of a sudden at the edge of your fov), then it often
becomes a red light.
