There were two totals in 1982. In July we had an exceedingly long (106
minute totality) which I rated an L = 1.5. This was actually an average
value, since I thought the top half of the Moon was completely black (0),
while the bottom half was a bright orange-red (3). In December, the Moon
completely disappeared . . . the value I assigned was L = 0. Both eclipses
were affected by airborne dust and ash placed into the atmosphere by the
April eruption of the El Chichon volcano in Mexico.
