I've done some more thinking about this fireball. It was looong  -  120 to
130 degrees, with a terminal burst near the end of the path, which was at
about 30 degrees elevation...    ...so although it passed overhead, the
sonic boom originated (probably) at that point. But I still don't understand
the statement in the FAQ section...
