Jim,

I dont know where you are coming from on this. I have had the pleasure
of comparing Hawaii's best sites (Haleakala and Mauna Kea) against some
of the best on the mainland (White Mountain in California, for example)
and I find our Hawaiian skies just about as dark as the best in the
mid-latitudes.

Actually, I saw the Gegenschein best from the top of Haleakala. It is
faint, and requires averted vision, but it is definitely visible from
there. However its visibility seems to vary from day to day and season,
so you just may have tried during a "poor" time.
