I'm coming from many years of observing from Hawaii, and a fair number from
the northern US, in the upper midwest, latitudes 45+. In Hawaii it
frequently seems to me that the sky will have a "grainy" or slightly murky
quality, very variable from night to night. It's difficult to describe.
Last November, I spent 6 nights on the summit of Haleakala observing the
Leonids, and my observing partner and I had the same impression each night.
One night, the final night, seemed much darker than the preceeding five.
Sometimes one portion of the sky seems a little different from another.
It seems darker on a truly transparent night from the northern latitudes.
These are just my opinions and impressions.
