(meteorobs) comets and asteroids & the meeting in Vienna
Hi list!
I was searching in the web for something but could not find it. But I found
this document and I was thinking if this project is connected with the
meeting which will take place in July in Vienna (which is a very nice and
interesting town. About the music: I think the two concert halls are closed
in July and August, so maybe there won't be Classical Music there).

The British examine danger from space
Working group is to calculate the risk of a comet impact
London (dpa). The British government assumes itself the danger from space.
Science undersecretary of state lord Sainsbury appointed a three head
working group, which was to examine the danger of an impact of Asteroiden or
comets on earth on Tuesday. The experts are to estimate the risk of such an
impact and make suggestions, how Great Britain can take part in
international projects for the observation of " near earth objects ".
Chairman of the working group is Harry Atkinson, chairman of the British
science advice and the advice of the European space organization ESA. The

das Risiko eines solchen Einschlags einschätzen und Vorschläge machen, wie
sich Großbritannien an internationalen Vorhaben zur Beobachtung von
"erdnahen Objekten" beteiligen kann.
Vorsitzender der Arbeitsgruppe ist Harry Atkinson, Vorsitzender des
britischen Wissenschaftsrates und des Rates der Europäischen
Weltraum-Organisation ESA. Die Gefährdung durch die bekannten Asteroiden
(kleine Planeten) oder Kometen wird als gering eingeschätzt, doch soll die
Arbeitsgruppe vor allem die Gefährdung durch bisher nicht bekannte
Himmelskörper prüfen. Die Erde ist voller Spuren entsprechender Einschläge.
"Die Gefahr, dass ein Asteroid oder ein Komet großen Schaden anrichtet, ist
äußerst gering. Niemand sollte deswegen nachts wach liegen und sich Sorgen
machen. Aber wir können diese Gefahr nicht ignorieren, auch wenn sie gering
ist. Und man mag eine internationale Beobachtung für nötig halten", sagte
Lord Sainsbury.
